Bamboo Linens - Environmentally Friendly and Healthy to Use

Bamboo linens are the ideal "green" fabrics, coming directly from nature and returning completely to nature at the end of their usefulness. These textiles are made from bamboo plants which are grown on vigilantly managed bamboo plantations in China. For panda lovers, there is no need to worry, as the bamboo that is grown for use in textiles is not the same bamboo that pandas love to eat. The bamboo plantations are in pollution-free areas, and no chemical pesticides or fertilizers are needed in the growing process because bamboo thrives without the use of pesticides. Bamboo is a variety of grass which grows as tall as some large trees, but it grows four times faster than trees, making it very renewable and sustainable.

Bamboo minimizes carbon dioxide output and actually generates 35% more oxygen than trees. Bamboo is able to thrive even in drought, floods and high temperatures and requires comparatively little water. The natural cellulose fibers are 100% biodegradable and are naturally anti-bacterial. Bamboo contains a unique natural agent which has anti-fungal properties. Because bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial, the fabric stays fresh and will resist bacteria that causes odors. The fibers are uniquely capable of absorbing moisture and are able to breathe because of natural cellulose micro holes, making it ideal for keeping people cool and comfortable in hot weather. Bamboo is ideal for people who are prone to skin irritation due to its naturally hygienic properties and because it is produced without dangerous chemicals and softening agents. The purity and the types of bamboo linen depends upon the content of the bamboo used in making the fabric.

Different Types of Bamboo Linens

  • Blended Bamboo products: In this type of fabric, bamboo is combined with other materials such as cotton, wool, silk or synthetics. Cotton and wool are used very often to make a bamboo blended product, and blending the fibers retains all of the beneficial properties of the bamboo, enhanced by the added material. Blended bamboo products are long lasting and exhibit the features of both the materials. The percentage of blended fabric with bamboo varies extensively. In many bamboo linens the bamboo fabric may be 10 percent and some other blended products may contain more than 50 percent. The addition of other fibers can enhance the material's silkiness, warmth or texture. Blended bamboo is frequently used to make bamboo sheets, bamboo pillow cases and bamboo towels.

  • Pure Bamboo products: This type of textile is made only from bamboo materials. But this type of product is fairly rare as the manufacturers usually prefer to blend it with some other material since it is more popular among consumers. Pure bamboo pulp is refined by crushing the woody parts of the plant, using natural enzymes to break down the stems so that the natural fibers can be combed out and spun into yarn. The pulp is then processed into bamboo fiber. This fiber is spun into long strands that will not pill or break. Bamboo fiber is thinner than human hair and has properties that resist static.

  • Viscose Bamboo Fabric: To manufacture bamboo viscose, the leaves and soft inner pith of the hard bamboo trunk are extracted through a steaming process, then crushed by machines. That crushed product is then soaked in an environmentally friendly chemical (sodium hydroxide) which easily washes away and is non-toxic. The cellulose is then forced through tiny sieve-like nozzles into a sulfuric acid wash that solidifies the material into viscose fiber threads and neutralized the sodium hydroxide. The fiber threads are then spun into yarn and rolled onto spools. By this process we get the thread and yarn of bamboo which is then fashioned into various products of bamboo linen. Our Bamboo Collection produced by this process are very common in the market.

Bamboo fabrics are highly desirable, as they are hypoallergenic, durable and can actually become softer with use. The use of bamboo textiles is also very popular because it is environmentally friendly and "green".
